Denver to the Ski Resorts: Drive Times, Passes & No-Car Options
A Tripsit guide
Short answer: for the shortest drive pick Loveland, or Eldora to skip I-70 entirely; for a full day trip pick Copper, Winter Park or Keystone on a weekday; and give Breckenridge, Vail, Beaver Creek, Steamboat and Aspen at least one night. Without a car, take the Winter Park Express train or a CDOT Snowstang bus.

I-70 timing: when to drive
- Worst westbound: Saturday and Sunday mornings, roughly 6:30–9:30 a.m., and holiday mornings.
- Worst eastbound: weekend afternoons, roughly 1–7 p.m., worst on Sundays and the last day of a holiday weekend.
- Fix: leave Denver by about 6 a.m. or ski a weekday; head home by about 1–2 p.m. or stay for dinner and drive after 7 p.m.
- Traction Law: from September 1 to May 31, vehicles on the I-70 mountain corridor need AWD/4WD or approved traction devices when the law is in effect. Check COtrip.org before you leave.
Getting there without a car
- Winter Park Express (Amtrak): Denver Union Station to the base of Winter Park Resort. Rides for 2026–27 start in December; fares from $19; departs Denver 7:00 a.m. and Winter Park 4:35 p.m. Skis ride free in a baggage area.
- Snowstang (CDOT): weekend and holiday buses from Union Station, Federal Center and the Wooly Mammoth Park-n-Ride to Arapahoe Basin, Breckenridge, Copper and Loveland. Last season ran December–early May at $25 round trip; check RideSnowstang.com for 2026–27 dates.
- Bustang West Line / Pegasus: to Frisco and Vail — they stop in town, not at a lift, so plan on local buses (Summit Stage and Vail's town bus are free).
